Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ — Sublimation Papers

Can you sublimate onto cotton using regular paper? +

No, traditional sublimation (TruePix) only works on polyester or polyester-coated surfaces. For sublimation on cotton, three solutions exist: Chromablast (white cotton only, dedicated inks), LibertySubli / LibertyPatch / EasySubli (HTV sublimation, all light and dark materials), or the new VersiFlex Light from Sawgrass (light cotton, wood, unglazed ceramic, self-cutting).

What differentiates VersiFlex from classic sublimation? +

Traditional sublimation requires a polyester or polyester-coated substrate. VersiFlex uses a special "Expander" cartridge that creates an intermediate layer, allowing transfer onto natural materials (cotton, raw wood, unglazed ceramic, nylon). It also featuresself-trimming : only the printed design is transferred, without prior cutting. Compatible only with Sawgrass SG500 and SG1000 printers.

Should you print in mirror image using sublimation paper? +

For direct sublimation papers (TruePix, Chromablast), mirror printing is mandatory because the transfer occurs face down on the substrate. For HTV papers (LibertySubli, EasySubli, LibertyPatch, VersiFlex), the printing is not mirrored : the film is applied directly to the substrate, image side up.

What type of paper is best for sublimation on dark textiles? +

Standard sublimation papers (TruePix, Chromablast) only work on light or white. For dark textiles, use an HTV sublimation paper : LibertySubli (130–145°C), LibertyPatch (190°C in 2 steps), or EasySubli (coming soon). These products incorporate an opaque white layer that allows colors to stand out against dark backgrounds.

Does LibertyPatch really require two pressings? +

Yes. The LibertyPatch process takes place in two distinct steps: a first pressing at 150°C for 20 seconds to transfer the sublimation ink onto the patch, then a second pressing at 190°C for 50 seconds to fix the patch to the final substrate (textile, polyester, any material). This process guarantees a strong bond and intense colors, even on dark materials.
