How to personalize cotton?

If you're getting into textile customization, you've probably noticed that the materials available on the market are often made from synthetic fibers like polyester. However, if your goal is to offer more natural materials, such as cotton, you're likely wondering how to customize them. While cotton textiles are more expensive to buy, they aren't necessarily more difficult to personalize.

There are even several solutions that allow you to personalize cotton. You may even already be personalizing it, but are you aware of all the options available to you? Whether you're a seasoned expert in personalization techniques or a newcomer to the world of printing, here's a quick overview of the key techniques you need to know to personalize cotton!

The Specialist - Cotton Sublimation

For anyone looking for a simple and effective way to personalize cotton items, Cotton Sublimation is the solution. This technique allows you to print designs on white or very light-colored textiles (pale pink, pale blue, ecru, etc.) made of at least 60% cotton.

Ideal for beginners, this printing technique doesn't require a large budget or investment. It will allow you to create markings on high-quality materials with excellent wash resistance.

Cotton sublimation works almost identically to polyester sublimation. In other words, the creation process is very similar. The difference lies in the equipment used. For cotton sublimation, you will need an SG500 or SG1000 printer , Chromablast sublimation inks , and Chromablast sublimation paper . These last two items are essential for personalizing cotton using sublimation.

Note that, unlike classic polyester sublimation, you will need to cut out your image to avoid having glue deposits around it.

The Alternative - Specific Papers

You can only use one type of ink in your sublimation printer: either Sublijet (polyester) or Chromablast (cotton). If you wish to offer both types of personalization in equal quantities, we recommend having two separate printers.

However, if you already have polyester sublimation equipment and cotton sublimation represents occasional orders, you don't necessarily need to invest in a new printer. (Phew!). In fact, if you want to personalize cotton with a sublimation printer equipped with polyester inks, it's possible… provided you use the right paper !

Papers like Liberty Subli or Easy Subli , for example, allow you to personalize cotton fabrics with your polyester sublimation printer. The result is a thin, soft, and elastic fabric with vibrant, deep colors. However, unlike traditional polyester sublimation, there will be a slight raised area because the image is not embedded within the fabric's weave. It's a process of applying the image directly to the textile.

⚠️⚠️⚠️ Also known as printable Flex, these papers allow you to personalize dark or colored textiles. To learn more, feel free to consult our article on the subject: Personalizing dark textiles with sublimation is possible!

The Essential - Flocking

If you have a creative soul, if you love glittery, fluorescent or metallic effects, if you're not afraid of hours of weeding… Flocking is for you!

This solution is essential for personalizing all types of cotton materials (light or dark) with exceptional wash resistance.

A cutting technique highly favored by sports associations, flocking is a benchmark in the world of personalization. You'll find numerous color shades and effects (velvet, fluorescent, phosphorescent, metallic, stretch, etc.) allowing for all types of creations. Some specific flex materials even allow you to personalize nylon.

To ensure your customizations are successful the first time, carefully follow the pressing conditions indicated on each product sheet and always carry out a test before launching a large production run.

The Outsider - The DTF

A revolutionary technique in textile printing, DTF or Direct To Film will allow you to produce quality markings at a lower cost, and on any type of material (light or dark, cotton or polyester).

Suitable for medium to large production runs, this technique is even more accessible thanks to transfer printing services. These services allow you to print your designs and send them to you "ready to press".

Direct-to-Fly (DTF) printing is perfectly suited for personalizing cotton by adjusting the pressing conditions. For DTF printing on cotton, use 160°C for 12 seconds . Peel the fabric while it is still cold

Créadhésif Tip : To cool your transfer faster, we recommend pressing it between the 2 plates of a cold press.

In addition to these techniques, you can also personalize your cotton items using screen printing, laser transfer, or DTG printing. All these solutions will allow you to achieve high-quality markings on natural fiber textiles.
